REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR COACHES:
In order to be registered as a coach, copies of the applicant’s
current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Safety Training for
Swim Coaches must be on file in the office. Note that this year,
Red Cross Lifeguard Training may be submitted in lieu of Safety
Training for Swim Coaches. In addition, some coaches must submit
proffer that the education requirement has been completed.
FIRST YEAR EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR COACHES:
Article 501-74 “All coaches of USA Swimming clubs, including
seasonal clubs, who register for the first time as a coach member,
shall complete coaches’ education required by USA Swimming
prior to receiving their coach membership for the second year.”
This education requirement is in addition to the safety requirements
listed above. Many first year coaches have received packets from
USA Swimming, ASCA, or the New England Office. The test is also
available on line at ASCA’s website: www.swimmingcoach.org.
Or contact the office (781-449-0270 or office@neswim.com
for a copy of the test. The test is based on material in “The
Foundations of Coaching Home Study Course,” “Progressions
for Athlete and Coach Development,” (both available from ASCA)
and “USA Swimming Rules and Regulations” (sent to all
registered non-athletes). Be sure you have “The Foundations
of Coaching Test, 2nd edition.” Upon successful completion
of the requirement, the coach will receive a letter from ASCA (The
American Swim Coaches Association). A copy of the letter must be
sent to the New England Office prior to registering for the second
year of coaching with USA Swimming.
UNREGISTERED “COACHES” ON DECK:
Because of the continuing problem of unregistered “coaches”
on deck and the insurance problems that this creates, New England
has a fine system to deal with this situation. At each meet the
referee will ask any “coach” without a card to leave
the deck without exception. The referee will also make a list of
all those without cards. The list will be sent to the office to
be checked. If a “coach” who was asked to leave the
deck is found to be not fully registered (current certifications
and completed education requirement), the “coach” will
be fined $100 and the team will be fined $200 to be paid within
30 days. Any “coach” who refused to leave the deck will
cause the team’s swimmers to swim unattached for the remainder
of the meet.
TIMELY REGISTRATION OF TEAMS AND SWIMMERS:
A reregistering team that expects to participate in the end of
season meets must be fully registered by January 15 (or May 15 for
long course season), including a fully certified head coach, registered
athletes and a check to cover all fees. Any reregistering team that
does not adhere to this deadline will be required to swim all swimmers
in all end of season meets as “unattached” with no team
points or relays.
